課程概述

This seminar takes trauma as its main topic to further explore its relationship with the notion of ghost. The application of trauma to literary and cultural analyses has been widely practiced and acknowledged in the past few decades, among which the ethical implication of trauma can be regarded as the most prominent. How to deal with not simply traumatic experiences or scenes, but also the “structure” of trauma and its endless repetition, constitutes the center of traumatic studies. And ghost, itself a remnant of some traumatic event in the past, similarly re-appears/repeats by way of its intrusion in the present. This anachronistic temporality shared by trauma and ghost points to the possibility of similar structure between the two. The seminar will be divided into two sections: the first part discusses trauma by reading classic psychoanalytic works of Freud, Lacan, and Zizek; the second part focuses on the relationship between ghost and trauma.

課程目標
It is expected that the seminar will allow the student to develop a sophisticated understanding of the theory of trauma and ghost, and to equip the student with additional critical capabilities required to undertake advanced thesis work.
